Why did France get a piece of Germany after the war?

Great Britain, France, Soviet Union and United States were the Allies. The spoils of war have to be shared amongst the conquering forces. They were like a family and if one in your family is suffering then do you abandon them or protect them? We had and still have highest moral ethics even if we have spats like every normal family does.
