Thoughts on the dark knight(2008)?

Hi guys. I have been looking forward to watching this movie for a while now but these days i am too busy to sleep never mind watch a movie but i finally got the DVD yesterday and was wondering yout thoughts on it. I hear that it is a very dark movie. Is this true? Also what about Heath Ledger as the joker? Does it live up to all the hype? Thank you
