Considering the Great Gatsby's created persona, I'd argue the phrase indicates an apprehension at reviewing the frail, shadow life we all tend to create through more honest eyes. He pretended to exude sophistication and culture, while in fact, he was little more than above-par con-man. While mingling with the wealthy he had long pursued to be, he realized they lack some of the most basic characteristics of humanity, compion, understanding, and decency. Gatsby realized the sham he had labored over and perfected meant very little in such a superficial social circle.
